Following the release of the Industrial Renaissance Communication, "Basta! Get back on track!" calls for the EU to reduce red tape, help win the global competitiveness race, rethink exisiting policies and put the focus back on industry.

CEPI says there is a considerable price gap between the costs for energy in Europe and those in the rest of the world, something it says the EU must address.

It calls for a legislative environment in which European manufacturers can compete on a level playing field with other manufacturers throughout the world.

Teresa Presas, director general of CEPI, said: "The Basta! messages are meant for the current Commission and the next one. The campaign seeks to make the Industrial Renaissance more concrete."

Dick Searle, chief executive of The Packaging Federation, told Packaging News there was a risk of migration of the industry's customer base.

While the EU has accepted and adapted to the reality of goods being manufactured outside the EU and shipped in, he was concerned about investment decisions by companies and investors when looking at costs and legislation.

"The most fundamental issue is if economies are to rebalance by supporting the wealth-creating industries then political action is required, not just political rhetoric. Until we see political and bureaucratic action then I don't think anyone can rest easy.

He said the spiralling cost of energy was a major issue for industry, as well as red tape and legislation.

"My concern is we are getting an imbalance in terms of environmental legislation and cost of energy. There's lots of discussion about revamping the EU packaging and packaging waste directive. There's a risk that more legislation will be added without giving a passing thought to the impact of that."
